Photojournalism Portfolio Review

This one flows well, and all of the pictures are amazing. It has a very strong theme as well, and the photos follow through.

Sports Portfolio Review

The sports portfolio is pretty good. I don't really feel like the picture that I took fits well; it's not a very good picture. I think one of the other track pictures I took would be better. Many of the pictures are great, and it flows well.

Planning my Magazine Cover

1. What is the focus of your magazine? What topics or range of topics do you intend to cover with the stories?
Hunter/jumper horses and riding, interesting/amazing stories, tips, how-to, people and business features

2. Describe your typical reader.
Hunter/jumper riders, English riders, horse lovers, 12-20, mostly rural, some urban, any gender

3. What is the title of your magazine? Why?
High Standards. It is related to both hunters and jumpers(Standards are part of a jump).

4. What personality would you like your publication to have? What design elements will you use to try to create that personality? What type face would be best for your magazine? Why?
Bright and fun, creative, but organized- not to chaotic, bold and fun types, to catch people's attention.

5. Is there a cover or cover that you would like to use as the model for your magazine cover? Which cover do you think would be the best one for you to emulate? Which elements of the cover would you keep? Why would you keep them? Which ones would you change? How would you change them?
I really love the Young Rider covers- they are bright and bold. However, they do target a younger audience, so I would make it a bit more professional-looking, with less different colors and better photo choices.

6. Of the four types of covers--image based, illustration based, type based or concept based—which one do you think is the best fit for your magazine? Why?
Image-based, because it's about physical people and animals, and it will be easier to see what it is about and to understand.

7. What will you first cover story be? How will your present this topic visually on the cover? What visual elements (photograph(s), graphic(s) or illustration(s) will you need to complete the design?
Hunters or jumpers? (what should you do?) A hunter or jumper horse & rider.

Learning About Magazine Covers - My Favorite Cover

Oklahoma Today
"The Indians & Cowboys Issue," July/August
Steven Walker, Designer
Shane Bevel, Photographer

"The feature covers the Choctaw ponies, a herd of wild Spanish mustangs. The photographer camped out for three days to shoot the horses, and at night could hear them whinnying. The cover image was selected for the epheral light across the top of the horses head, and cropped so the reader could look into the eyes of the horse. This cover deliberately has no cover lines in order to send a message of tranquility and uninterrupted space, and has been very popular with readers."

This my favorite cover because, obviously, horses. It connects with me as a reader, and now I really want to go read the main story. Horses are usually a rare cover subject, especially such a beautiful picture of one, and especially with the horse as the only subject. For this reason, I think it would interest people who aren't horse lovers as well. The photo choice was awesome- the still action and bright light looks gorgeous. Choosing a black background seemed important, as the natural background would probably be too distracting from the subject.

Learning About Magazine Covers-The Four Types of Magazine Covers

Image-based covers are simple and pretty easy to do. However, they are the most common types of cover, and so it's harder to make it unique. It's best for travel, fashion, photography, and food magazines as well as some others because you want to have a photograph representing what the issue is about, and these are typically physical things that can have a picture used. Illustration-based magazines are unique and very cool-looking- it can represent a more abstract idea or capture something that is in words. Type-based covers give large, sharp, bold look to them. Concept-based covers are best used for a strong, bold message, or something that is funny.

Learning About Magazine Covers-Five Helpful Magazine Tips
